CHAPTER TEN

As I prepared myself for work the next morning I noticed that Camille was watching me intently.

"It doesn't seem to bother you at all that he's using you?"

I turned to her and gave her a kiss. "Baby, I'm doing menial tasks like every other summer intern. Why do you think companies have interns?"

"But you worked so hard to be here," she said.

"I appreciate that you want this to be a mind-expanding experience for me, but I'm okay, really. Trust me."

Camille grumbled. "He's doing this to get back at me," she said.

"No, he's not. He wants to make sure I'm not planning on milking his daughter for everything she's worth."

Camille gave me a little grin.

"I didn't mean like that."

She smoothed her hands up my back and looked at me in the full-length mirror. "The last time we spoke -"

"And how long ago was that?" I asked a little sarcastically. I was as tired of the silence between them as they were, they just hadn't admitted it yet.

"A long time ago," Camille sighed.

"Go on... the last time you spoke to him..." I prompted.

"He tried to convince me that you were just a distraction. That I needed a vacation and even a fling..."

"Your dad talked to you about having a fling?" I asked, unsure of what I thought about that.

"He said that it was okay to have some fun but that I needed to accept when it was over."

"And what did you say?"

"I told him that you weren't a fling and that he should get used to you because I would probably marry you."

My mouth dropped. "You told your father you would marry me?"

Camille looked up at me, "Yes... I... I mean, we’ve talked about it before, in Portland. Maybe one day right?" She suddenly seemed shy.

I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around her. "Baby, that's so romantic!"

Camile's face softened and she smiled. "Well, that's what I would like. Wouldn't you?"

"Yes!"

She looked relieved. "That's why he's doing this, I'm convinced of it. He's trying to drive you crazy so you'll leave. You're not going to leave are you?"

"Of course, I'm not going to leave! I would shovel poop for your father all day if it meant I could marry you."

"It won't come to that," she said seriously.

"Well, I'm just glad he's not in sanitation."

That morning at Vermillion went much the same. I finished sorting through the mess in John's filing cabinets and stripped and shredded the old hard copies that he no longer needed.

"Some of this stuff looks important," I said to him as I placed a fresh pile of organized folders on his sideboard.

"It's all important," he said. "But I have scans."

I looked back at him, puzzled as to why he needed the paper copies at all.

"I'm old-fashioned. I like paper," he said as if he’d read my mind. "I like something I can hold on to."

"Ahh," I said. “That makes more sense. Would you like me to put these away for you?"

"Thank you," he said.

He’d seemed more relaxed around me since our discussion.
